BORN: ST PAUL, MINNESOTA
I love everything about St Paul. It has a cool vibe to it. I’m a musician, so I love the music scene there. Everything— hip-hop, jazz, lots of rock bands.
I have a band—Bomba de Luz—it’s Spanish. It means “consisting of light.” We’re a jazzy, folky, rock band. We started in high school and we started getting gigs. I play guitar.
Some of the most real moments I’ve had in my life I’ve had with a guitar in my hand. Definitely. It’s not necessarily performing in front of a lot of people, although those times have been really cool, too, but it’s more the late-night jams in basements. One of my roommates is a jazz musician, so we jam everyday. It makes me feel alive—just to create something.
I’m really in love with hip-hop. When I meet someone who’s really good at free-styling words and rapping, that’s always the best because we can together create a mood; they’re talking about anything and I can be playing anything and it just syncs up. I think that’s my favorite part about music for sure. It’s just the spontaneity and the never-know-what-you’re-going-to-play-next mentality.
