BORN: BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA
I was born in Beaufort, South Carolina. My father was a U.S. Marine and he was posted there. You can tell that I don’t have an American accent. I moved to Australia when I was five years old. I grew up in Canberra and Melbourne.
It’s funny, whenever I go back to the U.S. and I show my U.S. passport, the immigration guys are always wondering about my accent. And at the end of talking to me, they always say, “Welcome home, son.” Which brings a bit of a smile to my face.
My father has lots of stories of what he did at that time. It was the 1960’s. It was the time of the assassination of Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was right in the middle of all that. For me, it’s a special place because of some of those associations.
I feel good when people ask where I was born and I say Beaufort. It’s a little bit different and that helps me connect.
